Small Spaces Can Have BIG Style!

Have a small space and need some design ideas?

First, let’s talk color….you don’t need to stay with drab white walls. Reach for a rich deep color on the walls which will intensify the space and make it look like a gem. Don’t want to be so bold? Paint the walls in a light turquoise hue to infuse cheer and tranquility into the room.

Regardless of the color your choose, you will want to brighten the space up with lighting and reflection if you don’t have a lot of natural light beaming into your home. Reflective objects such as shiny or glossy tiles and mirrors can introduce brightness into any room. In addition to brightening a space, mirrors of various sizes and shapes can invoke the feeling of openness and more square footage. Choose lighting that can be hung from the ceiling or be mounted on the wall to eliminate the use of your precious floor space. There are so many options available to fit any style or décor.

Your walls can hold more than just mirrors and lighting! Utilize vertical space to your advantage. Of course, the most common item to hang on the wall is your television, but have you considered your desk or dining table? Items that aren’t used all the time can be stowed away against the wall with ease while opening up your floor plan while not in use. While we are talking walls…don’t be afraid to use that larger artwork to draw the eye; it will become a stunning statement piece when paired with regular size furniture.

Speaking of furniture…try to choose items that can serve double duty. For seating, you may want to use a deep sofa or daybed that can also be used as a guest bed. Consider ottomans and cubes with storage that can also be used as seating or tables once a serving tray is placed on top. Placement of the furniture is also important. Carpet should be large enough to place most of your furniture on top of it because a smaller carpet will make the room appear smaller. Stage your furniture so it’s pulled away from the wall and allow space in between pieces to avoid a cramped appearance.

Finally, select furniture and pieces you enjoy. Be selective and purposeful when choosing so each piece serves a purpose. Be mindful of cohesiveness so your small space won’t appear cluttered. Most importantly, have fun and stay true to your personality. Happy decorating!
