Why Not... Add a Bottle Tree?

Why not… add a bottle tree, or two, to your outdoor space?

Not only are bottle trees a beautiful piece that can be added to your yard or outdoor entertaining area, but there is so much history behind them as well. It is believed that bottle trees originated somewhere around the 9th century in Kongo, but it is also believed that they may have originated earlier in Europe.

Legend has it that if you place glass bottles on a tree outside, but near your home, they will capture the roaming, mostly evil, spirits near your home at night. Then, when the sun rises in the morning the evil spirits will be destroyed by the sunshine the next day.

She knew that there could be a spell put in trees, and she was familiar from the time she was born with the way bottle trees kept evil spirits from coming into the house - by luring them inside colored bottles, where they cannot get out again.
— Livvie, by Eudora Welty

It is thought that bottle trees were originally started with blue glass bottles, but over time people have evolved these beautiful pieces of history to include glass of every color. Blue glass is thought to have healing properties, which is likely why it is a popular choice of many people. However, you can really make bottle trees your own by choosing bottles of different shapes and colors - make it unique!
